Another one bites the dust

AMD loses another senior sales executive.

It seems like rats are deserting the sinking ship. It would have been ok if Henri left and was replaced by someone else. However, Henri leaves, Hector says I'lld do the job and now Rick Hegberg leaves. These are not good signs for AMD. On the positive side. Their costs are reducing.

I wonder if Hector will be doing this job too? Troubling times for AMD. With Barcelona finally arriving, it's tough for them to lose two senior sales guys.

AMD will lose at least 300 million USD this quarter.

If AMD really loses $300m this quarter, how much does that leave them with? At some point the tank will run empty.

CNet is reporting that story a little differently in an article about Henri Richard taking a position at Freescale (formerly Motorola's semi-conductor division):

"Since Richard's departure, more changes have taken place at AMD. Rick Hegberg, senior vice president of worldwide sales and an executive who reported to Richard, also is leaving, AMD spokeswoman Cathy Abbinanti said Wednesday.

Hegberg's departure is part of a move by AMD to flatten its management as the company shifts power from his office to regional sales and marketing offices, she said. There was "mutual agreement that he leave to look for other opportunities," she said.

"This is a shift to put increased responsibility and authority more within the regions. We're trying to create a flatter organization for AMD around the world," she said. "The ultimate goal is to be closer to our customers and drive efficiency for business operations."

Regional sales executives now will report directly to the office of CEO Hector Ruiz, she said, adding that the company already had moved to the model with China and its sales chief, Karen Guo. "

There was "mutual agreement that he leave to look for other opportunities," she said.

What else can they say?

"Umm, he left us because we are going down and his stock options are underwater"

"Umm, he left us because he has integrity and could not fathom the notion of selling a DOA product"

"Umm, he told Hector what he thought of the leadership and was asked to leave"

Umm...

Technically.. they can say anything, but it is noteworthy that they didn't drop the "it's a mutual thing" when Henri jumped ship.

This is all somewhat comical. Here I am typing on my XP P3 933, nearly 8 years old, and all I hear from (mostly) Sharikou is about how the latest quad from AMD beats Intels.

The software needs for hardware requirements ended oh, about 7 years ago. Since then, only niches had any concern for the latest hardware. Most only needed function - and function that would truly function.

That was Apple, or XP for most and a P4. But now Microsloth tries for a twosome. Kill function and require more hardware. Here we have Vista!

What a joke. Yea it needs a gig of memory and a processor upgrade, but what do you get? Crawl and incompatibility.

This is about the masses. They will get screwed with Vista and whatever processor is needed to fulfill the needs of this "Killer App".

Sick.

We have two competing headlines over at some tech enthusiast blogs. Just want some opinion from you, 180.

This is not about Penryn v. Barcelona.

It is: AMD re-captured some market share in Q2. And Intel is forecasting greater revenue for Q3.

These trends will obviously collide at some point. The AMD fact is written in stone as it appears they did gain back share in retail, based on published articles. We are more than mid-way through Q3 so Intel's estimates are based on partial data.

What do you think is going on and more importantly, what will happen? Please prognosticate.

And thanks for a great blog!
